Going for a spin*
My Dad bought a new bike recently along with a new bike seat for LPP. He has been so excited about this purchase, phoning me up to tell me of his plan to buy the bike and bike seat beforehand, updating me on the order status as well as a last minute switch of bike seat models, and, at last, announcing the arrival. It was really adorable. Yesterday, we took LPP out for a spin around my Dad's neighborhood, me pedaling (or lagging) behind on a borrowed bike. It was really so much fun! I hadn't been on a bicycle in easily 10 years. LPP had a blast, announcing afterwards "that was fun!". What's most touching about our bike ride yesterday is that some of my earliest memories, though vague, include images of bends and turns that I viewed from my own bike seat on the back of my Dad's bike when I was LPP's age. And so the tradition continues. Bike riding has held a prominent, warm place in my memories of time spent with my Dad; he would take my brother and me and our friends bike riding in the summers, like a Papa duck leading a paddling of ducklings. Ah, so many fun bike rides along Riverside Drive and across and through Central Park. And now LPP gets to share the magic and love that is bike riding with his Pop-Pop.
*My Dad DOES wear a helmet, he just doesn't have it on in this picture I took while taking shelter under a canopy of tall trees during a brief rain shower - in case you were concerned.
